North Carolina Troops 1861 - 1865

We have just added North Carolina Troops 1861 - 1865 A Roster to our collection. This is a set of 18 volumes. The rosters contained in each volume are arranged numerically by regiment or battalion and then alphabetically by company, and each roster is preceded by a unit history. Officers and enlisted men are then listed in separate sections, the arrangement being (with a few exceptions) alphabetical by surname. Each name is followed by a service record that includes information such as the soldier's county of birth and residence; his age and occupation at time of enlistment; promotions; whether he was wounded, captured, or killed; and whether he deserted or died of disease.

This collection will be on the shelf at R GEN 929.3756 NOR starting Wednesday, August 3rd. Due to its size, it will not be housed in the "New Genealogy" section.

Taking a Trip in Texas?

You might want to visit some Civil War Memorials. We have acquired the book: Sacred Memories: The Civil War Monument Movement in Texas. This book is divided into geographic sections - East, North, North Central, Central, West and the Panhandle, South, and Southeast Texas. It tells the story of each monument and its creation. It has general maps that show the county and type (Confederate or Union) of monuments.

What's in a Name?

Are you sure your Great-Uncle Jack was really named Jack? He could have been Jacques, John or Jacob. If he was John, was it spelled Eion, Evan, Gian, Giovanni, Hans, Ian…. And what about your Great-Great-Grandmother Betsy? Was she Bette, Bettina, Betty, or Elizabeth? Are you missing out on vital information because the spelling for the same person is different for different types of records?

To assist you in answering these questions, we have received two books: Gramp’s Nickname and Granny’s Nickname. Both are by Helen Swenson.

July 14th 7:00 pm: The North Collin County Genealogical Society will host Mr. Dan Bishop.
