Are You Ready for April 2nd? and Upcoming Events

Are you prepared for the 1940 Census?  When the census first comes out, it will not be indexed by names.  you need to find the Enumeration District in order to locate your ancestors records.  Some Enumeration Districts changed between 1930 and 1940.  There is a great tutorial by Steve Morse at
http://stevemorse.org/census/unified.html Check it out now so you can have those Enumeration Districts ready to go.

Upcoming Events:
Saturday, February 25 10:00 am - 3:00 pm Sam Bass Day at the Allen Depot 100 East Main Street.  The Allen Heritage Guild is presenting a unique event which includes a reenactment of the first successful train robbery in Texas.  The 1st successful Train Robbery in Texas occurred in Allen, TX, Feb. 22, 1878, by Sam Bass and his gang. Re-enactments throughout the afternoon (Noon, 1:30 & 2:30) by Allen High School students. Music of the era and author talk in the morning. Food and fun for the whole family. Historical art contest awards presented by "Ebenezer Allen" round out the day.  This is a FREE event!

Thursday, March 8 6:45 - 8:30 at the Roy and Helen Hall Memorial Library 101 East Hunt Street.  The North Collin County Genealogical Society will meet in the Dulaney Room.  You do not have to be a member to attend.

Saturday, April 21 12:00 - 5:00 pm at the Roy and Helen Hall Memorial Library 101 East Hunt Street.  the John F. Greer Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will host Mr. Don Raney.  Mr. Raney will be speaking about "Revolutionary Ancestors" and " Early American Migration Routes".  Ms. Linda Sullivan of the DAR will be speaking on "The Mechanics of Joining the DAR or SAR".  This is a FREE program - all are welcome!

Louisiana Family Maps and Upcoming Events

Are you looking for information on early settlers in Louisiana?  If so, we have received the Family Maps series of Land Patent Books for the following parishes:

This Saturday, February 18th, 10:30 am - 12:30 pm:  at the Haggard Public Library located at 2501 Coit, Plano.  The Genealogy Friends of Plano present a FREE program by Meg Hacker, Director of Archival Operations NARA SW Region.  Ms. Hacker's program will be on Using the 1940 Census.  With the release of the census coming on April 2nd, this is a program you don't want to miss.

Save the Date!  April 21st, 12:00 - 5:00 pm: at the Roy and Helen Hall Memorial Library located at 101 East Hunt Street, McKinney.  The John F. Thursday, February 9 6:45 pm in the Dulaney Room of the Roy and Helen Hall Memorial Library: North Collin County Genealogical Society will host Mr. Aaron Holt from NARA.  Mr. Holt will be speaking about the 1940 Census which is scheduled to become available to the public in April.  You do not have to be a member to come to this program.  (I attended one of Mr. Holt's seminars recently - he is an excellent speaker.  I encourage you to attend.  Susan)

Friday, March 2 6:00 - 11:00 pm at the Haggard Library:  Lock-In at the Haggard Library.  Genealogists will have the library to themselves for the evening.  We will begin the evening with a Welcome at 6pm.  The classes will include FamilySearch.org, Legacy software, Immigration Research, Collin County Genealogy Corner, DNA and genealogy, Newspaper Research, and National Archives.  We will also have demonstrations of the Civil War Database.  The heritage groups that will be represented include DAR-Daughters of American Revolution, SAR-Sons of American Revolution, DRT-Daughters of Republic of Texas, War of 1812 Society, Mayflower Society, Scots of America, SUVCW-Sons of Union Veterans of Civil War, Collin County Genealogical Society, and Genealogy Friends of Plano Libraries Inc.  Registration is required as there is only room for 50 people.
